What Thanksgiving Means to Me: A Celebration of Blessings, Family, and Tradition

Thanksgiving has always held a special place in my heart. It’s more than just a day on the calendar—it’s a celebration of gratitude, family, friends, and the traditions that make life rich and meaningful. Growing up, Thanksgiving was the one day of the year where the motto, “The more, the merrier,” rang true in every sense. It was a day filled with laughter, storytelling, and plenty of food to go around.

I’ve carried that spirit into my own home, where Thanksgiving has become an all-day event. Preparation starts days in advance, and yes, I admit I go a little overboard. But how can I not? This is the tradition our Maw passed down to us, and I love every second of it. My love language is feeding the people I care about, and Thanksgiving is my time to shine.

A Feast to Remember

On Thanksgiving, my kitchen turns into a whirlwind of activity. I smoke a turkey, bake a ham, and my dad or brother-in-law always pitches in by smoking a brisket. The house fills with the aroma of slow-cooked meats, buttery cornbread dressing, sweet potato soufflé, deviled eggs, and pea salad. It’s the kind of smell that makes you close your eyes and smile.

And then there are the desserts. Oh, the desserts! Chocolate pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin rolls, banana pudding, chocolate sheet cake, and my signature buttermilk pound cake all take their rightful place on the table. Honestly, I make just as many sweets as savory dishes, because no Thanksgiving celebration is complete without something for everyone’s sweet tooth.

By 1 p.m., the main meal is ready, but it’s far from the end of the feast. My house is stocked with snacks and finger foods to keep everyone satisfied all day long. From morning coffee to late-night leftovers, Thanksgiving is about indulging and sharing.

More Than Just Food

But Thanksgiving isn’t just about what’s on the table—it’s about who’s around it. My favorite part of the day is the time we spend together. It’s a chance to catch up with family and friends, to hear stories old and new, and to welcome newcomers to the fold. The laughter is loud, the stories are long, and the love is unmistakable.

Even as we celebrate, we honor the ones who aren’t with us. We set an extra plate or share a favorite memory of a loved one. Thanksgiving reminds us that, no matter what, there’s always something to be thankful for: our freedom, the sacrifices of our veterans, the family and friends still here with us, and the blessings we’ve been given.

A Tradition of Gratitude

To some, the sheer scale of our Thanksgiving might seem excessive. But to me, it’s a joyful reflection of all the good in our lives. It’s a chance to press pause on the busyness of the world and focus on what really matters. Thanksgiving is about coming together, celebrating our blessings, and remembering that gratitude is the heart of every tradition.

So, this Thanksgiving, I encourage you to count your blessings. Whether you’re surrounded by a crowd or enjoying a quiet day, take a moment to reflect on the good things in your life. And if you’re anything like me, feed your loved ones well—it’s a language that never fails to bring people together.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving. May your day be filled with love, laughter, and all the delicious things that make this season so special.
