4 Tips To Help Anyone Thinking About Starting An Online Retail Store

 Well, we finally did it! Three Mad Hatters Mercantile is open for business, and we can't wait to get to know all of you! 

  Let me be completely honest: I did not know what I was getting myself into when I decided to build an online store. I have laughed, cried, and cussed A LOT, but we are finally open! I have to say, I have a whole new appreciation for the Tech world today! 

  I needed to make a career change and wanted to do something beneficial for myself and my family! While I am PROUD to have been a part of the Energy Industry, I wanted to be home with my husband and be able to spend more time with my grandkids. We have traveled for work for the last 12 years and spent many nights apart. Below are four tips for anyone else considering doing the same.

  I wanted to start this business four years ago and have spent many hours researching the E-Commerce industry. I had a pretty good grasp on what to expect, but that was an illusion. When you think you have done enough research, you haven't. Spend time familiarizing yourself with the language before trying to build a website. This was my biggest headache, as they say!

  When you are at your wits-end and think I'm in over my head, close your computer and walk away. Listen, as we all know, there is a plethora of information on the World Wide Web, so utilize what's there. The hosting platform I chose (Shopify) had most of the information I needed to succeed. However, what I couldn't find there was available elsewhere.

  I tried to solve every issue myself but, in the end, needed a helping hand. I had problems with the layout but found solutions by using apps. The saying "There is an app for that" applies here. If you are unfamiliar with coding, many great apps are available.

  Lastly, When second-guessing yourself and your life choices, DO NOT give up. My Paw always said, "CAN'T NEVER COULD," and he was right. My husband, John, and family were vital in getting me through and encouraging me not to give up. I often felt overwhelmed, frustrated and thought about hiring a website designer. While this would have been so much easier, I needed to learn as much as possible by doing it myself. I also needed to prove that changing careers in mid-life was not a mistake. Who says you can't reinvent yourself at 49? I say, anything is possible and you will only know if you try!
